It is known that Al-Masann was the only tool by which families could store their food for long periods of time without expiration or spoilage, especially when the residents of Tabuk traveled, as they often did, in search of water and vegetation. The technique used in the construction of Al-Masann is based on regulating the temperature inside the storage space — a cavity in the rock created by erosion. The cavity is tightly sealed with stones and mud blocks mixed with rock hyrax urine to prevent air penetration and the approach of rodents and insects.
This ingenious storehouse helped the desert inhabitants move easily and store food in safe places, as well as minimize the burden on them and their animals during travels.
With the advent of technology, Al-Masann became part of the historical and cultural heritage of the region's inhabitants, and heritage enthusiasts and conservationists seek to preserve the legacy of the creative residents of Tabuk.
