Many believe that Muslims have a lot of strict rules and prohibitions. They are not allowed to eat pork, drink alcohol, or even wear gold. For those who are just getting acquainted with religion, it is necessary to remember that all Sharia prohibitions are created for the benefit of man. If you start to disassemble them, then you will understand. For example, non-Muslims, having delved into the analysis of the ban on pork, found out that pork meat is indeed saturated with “dirt”, and most of them refused this.
Why are Muslim men not allowed to wear gold?
“Tell me, who forbade the decorations of Allah (God, Lord) [everything that pleases the eye and heart, good, graceful, refined], which He brought out for people, and good from the good (from food) ?!” (Quran, 7:32).
Firstly, a woman can afford a fairly wide range of opportunities in this matter, provided that this beauty is hidden from strangers.
Unlike women, it is permissible for the stronger sex to use incense, wear beautiful clothes (provided that they are not likened to women’s attire), and wear jewelry in society. For a man, only gold and clothes made of pure silk are prohibited.
Once Hudhayfa ibn Yaman said: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade us to eat and drink from gold or silver dishes, he also forbade us to wear gold and silk and sit on anything made of silk” (al-Bukhari, Muslim, at-Tirmidhi). In another hadith, the Prophet ﷺ says: “Gold and silk are allowed for the women of my community, and they are not allowed for men” (Imams Ahmad and an-Nasai).
Scientific basis
As you know, there is not a single restriction in Islam that would not have a basis. Doctors from the private research Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, found out about the effect of gold on the male body.
USA. Men who have been wearing a gold wedding ring for more than 10 years without taking off, most often seek medical help, complaining of a lack of potency and infertility. Over time, the precious metal begins to oxidize and release chemical reaction products. Even a fraction of a milligram of gold oxide, regardless of the sample, when it enters the body, disrupts the functioning of the male gonads. The metal does not affect the female body in any way, since the female reproductive system is much better protected from the influence of various influences, after all, a woman is a mother.
As for the gilding
There is a lot of disagreement on this topic, so this aspect is on the list of doubtful. Not many people know that gilding can consist entirely of artificial materials without real gold. But still, you should avoid such materials as much as possible.
As for the dishes gilded or silver plated, then there are conditions. According to a reliable opinion, if when a metal is heated, gold or silver flows from it, then such dishes may be suitable for use. The same method can be practiced with gold-plated jewelry.
The position of various metals in Shariah
- Precious stones. Their position in Shariah is undesirable. And if there is one, then it is worth turning the ring so that the stone is inside.
- Platinum. According to the Hanafi madhhab, items made of any metal (iron, copper, lead, tin), except for silver, are makruh (undesirable).
- Rings made of bone or agate. Wearing such accessories is mubah (permissible actions, the commission of which is not prescribed, but not prohibited. Mubah performed with good intentions becomes a charitable deed, and with bad intentions – a sinful one).
- Silver plated iron rings. There is no ban on them.
It is also sunnah to wear a ring on the little finger of the right hand.
Conclusion
Summing up our article, we can say that only gold is considered haram, while the rest of the metals are mainly in the category of dubious. But this does not mean that now everything is possible. Unfortunately, in our time, many are guided by such a concept as “everything that is not forbidden is allowed.” In response to such views, one can cite a hadith that was transmitted by al-Bukhari, Muslim from the words of an-Nu‘man ibn Bashir, and it is reported that the Messenger of Allah said:
“Everything that is permitted is clear, and everything forbidden is clear, but between them there is doubtful, about which many people do not know. Therefore, whoever avoids dubious deeds, thereby protects his faith and his honor. And anyone who commits dubious deeds falls into sin, because a shepherd grazing cattle around the reserved pasture is close to setting foot on the reserved lands. Listen! Each king has his own commandments, and the commandments of Allah are His prohibitions. Listen! There is a piece of meat in the body: if it is healthy, then the whole body is healthy; if it becomes ill, then the whole body becomes ill. Listen, this is the heart!
It is worth avoiding expensive materials, if only because it can be considered excess and waste. Such things can cause condemnation and envy from others, which can lead to discord in the ummah. Why would a man adorn himself with bright jewels? His status in Muslim society is earned only through his actions and disposition. And to embellish yourself, this is a woman’s business, it’s not worth a man to become like a woman.
May the Almighty protect us from sin.
