What is the Holy Quran? And what does it contain?
The Holy Quran is the Holy Book or Holy Scripture of the Muslims. It lays down laws and commandments for them, codes for their social and moral conduct, and contains a comprehensive religious philosophy. The language of the Quran is Arabic. This is a collection of oral revelations given to the Holy Prophet Muhammad (s) over the course of twenty-three years.
The Holy Quran is divided into 114 chapters and each chapter consists of separate verses. The chapters (called surahs in Arabic) are of varying length, some of them being several lines long and others taking up many pages. The text of the Holy Quran has remained unchanged for the past 1500 years. The millions of copies of the Quran circulating in the world today are identical to one letter. And this is not surprising, since God says in the Holy Quran that He Himself will guard this book:
“Verily, it is We who have shown the exhibition, and undoubtedly, We are its keepers” (15:10)
For Muslims, the Quran is the Word of God and contains the complete guidance for mankind. Much of the Qur’an deals with God, His attributes and man’s relationship with Him. But it also contains directives for its followers, historical accounts of certain prophets and peoples, arguments for recognizing Muhammad as a true prophet, and good news for believers and warnings for unbelievers.
