In 2023 Ashura Day will be celebrated on June 28, it is celebrated according to the lunar calendar on the tenth day of the holy month of Muharram. The name of the holiday “Ashura” is translated as the number 10.
History of the holy day of Ashura
It was on the Day of Ashura that the heavens were created and the first man on earth, Adam, was created from clay. On the same day, the Prophet Muhammad blessed Adam and called on the future generation to do only good and pious deeds.
Until 680, history was the same for Sunnis and Shiites, but a historical event that occurred in the same year changed everything. In modern Iraq, the city of Karbil, on the Day of Ashura, Muhammad’s grandson Ali was killed. Since then, for the Shiites, this day has been associated with a day of remembrance and mourning for one of the most significant and memorable figures in the history of Islam.
How Muslims spend the day of Ashura
Shiites perform rituals on the day of memory of Ali. Sunnis dedicate the day to doing righteous deeds. Muslims try to settle their parents, spend this day with their families, often make donations and help those in need.
