Al-Fath Mosque in Al-Jamum Governorate in the Makkah region will be among the mosques to be renovated under the second phase of Prince Mohammed bin Salman's project for the development of historical mosques, the Saudi Press Agency reported on Saturday.

The mosque, in which the Prophet Muhammad is said to have prayed in the year of the conquest of Mecca, was demolished and destroyed over the preceding centuries before its construction was resumed in 1398, and it was then restored in 1419.

As part of the project, the Al-Fath Mosque will be renovated to increase its area from 455.77 square [meters]… of stone, gypsum, and wood.

The mosque's rawashin and mashrabiya express a distinctive window or balcony made from the finest wooden panels, with which windows and external openings are enclosed.

The building is characterized by the architectural style of the western region, despite the surrounding natural conditions on the coast, where historical mosques often display architectural craftsmanship reflecting a complex construction culture.

The mosques are distinguished by the simplicity of facade decoration, the relief quality of the wooden element, and the maintenance of a moderate temperature inside the mosque.

The project of Prince Mohammed bin Salman aims to achieve a balance between ancient and modern construction standards in a way that ensures the mosque's components have an appropriate degree of sustainability, and also seeks to integrate the effects of development with a set of heritage and historical characteristics.

The construction process is being carried out by Saudi companies specializing in heritage buildings.
