Saudi women are for the first time at the forefront of managing the female crowd during this year's Hajj, in accordance with the directives of the General President for the Affairs of the Grand Mosque and the Prophet's Mosque, Sheikh Abdulrahman Al-Sudais.

Nouf Kahl, Deputy Minister for Assistance to Women's Groups and Crowds, told Arab News that the Kingdom has become a global leader in crowd management thanks to the organization of the annual pilgrimage, when millions of Muslims flock to Saudi Arabia to perform Hajj and Umrah.

«Crowd management is one of the most complex management sciences, which requires (cooperation) from dozens of other administrative bodies of various services. The complexity of crowd management lies in how to handle a crowd belonging to different cultures, languages, and behaviors,» she said.

Kahl said that her agency was founded earlier this year, and it employs about 130 women.

She said that its main goal, as part of the General Presidency for the Affairs of the Grand Mosque and the Prophet's Mosque, was to «help pilgrims perform all their rituals with ease and peace and enrich their experience in the country of the Two Holy Mosques.».

Kahl added: «Our mission in the agency is to help and smoothly guide the female crowd to designated places where women can pray and perform their rituals in a safe environment, for example, to ensure the grouping (and guidance) of women arriving to perform Umrah and Hajj at the Mataf, to perform the circumambulation, to clear the women's prayer area after prayer, and to prepare for the round-the-clock reception of other groups of women. Working for pilgrims is a great honor that we are proud of.».

The agency is ready to receive female pilgrims daily until 9 p.m. at the Grand Mosque in Mecca. Most women will come after Asr prayer to break their fast and perform Maghrib and Isha.

«We will ensure the unification of efforts with the administrations dealing with crowds to complete the grouping stages for Tawaf al-Ifadah and Tawaf al-Wada,» she said.

Crowd management expert Akram Yan said that the Kingdom's practitioners play a leading role in discovering and implementing the latest best international practices.

He added that Saudi Arabia has become a pioneer in organizing mass events. It has managed to provide the best services and amenities, as well as ensure smooth movement in the circumambulation space around the Kaaba, its upper floors, the roof, and all floors of the masaa.

He noted that there are technological methods for analyzing crowd density and determining the optimal number based on calculating available space. This method is also used to organize mass gatherings in large areas in Europe. It produces calculations with high accuracy, allowing observers and analysts to predict numbers.
